Die Reliktbäume sind Zeugen einer fernen Vergangenheit. Sie gehören deshalb zu den wichtigsten und interessantesten Studienobjekten der Biogeografie, der Paläontologie und der Naturschutzbiologie. Das Naturhistorische Museum Freiburg hat sich dank diesem Projekt sowie dank zahlreicher Kontaktpartner im In- und Ausland zu einem bedeutenden Kompetenzzentrum für Dendrologie entwickelt.
Resultate
Die wichtigsten Resultate des Projekts wurden 2014 bis 2016 im Rahmen zweier Sonderausstellungen am Naturhistorischen Museum Freiburg (Bäume erinnern sich) sowie in Baku in Aserbaidschan (Green treasure of Azerbaijan) präsentiert.
Ein Höhepunkt der letzten Jahre ist zweifellos die Veröffentlichung der Monographie «Wingnuts (Pterocarya) and walnut family – Relict trees: linking the past, present and future». Eine Publikation über die Familie der Walnussgewächse (Juglandaceae) mit einem Schwerpunktauf der Gattung Pterocarya.
