"Snow
and ice"
From November 27, 2004 to February 13, 2005 |
|
Who isn't fascinated by snow and ice? They turn our
familiar landscapes into fairy-tale sceneries. They make winter
sports lovers' heart beat stronger.
How snow is formed? Why is it white? Are some snowflakes sometimes
identical? What's the geographical distribution of snow and ice on
Earth? How do animals manage to survive during winter? What's the
importance of snow to tourism? How can one live in the polar cold? |

The egg
From March 5, 2005 to April 10, 2005 flash
|
Who lays eggs? Birds of course! But laying eggs
is not feathered creatures' prerogative.
Generally spoken, an egg is an ovule fertilised
by a spermatozoid. It is the origin of the life of every animal,
where sexed reproduction occurs. Nevertheless, the exhibition
realised by the Natural History Museum will only focus on some
species and will offer the visitors the possibility to observe
the hatching of hens' eggs, of frogs' eggs and
artemias' eggs
(freshwater crustacean).

Eggs in carved stone and in polished stone, as well
as various birds' eggs will be displayed.
Several workshops on the topic of "Dying eggs with
natural products" will be held in association with the botanical
gardens of Fribourg University. You will have the opportunity to
experiment the traditional activity of dying eggs not only with
onions but also with less-known methods like dying eggs with plants
or flowers. The dates and
times of these events will be posted on this website
by mid-February. Information will also be available at the welcome
desk of the museum.

"Hemp"
From April 23, 2005 to September 4, 2005
Notre
affiche |
|
The hemp is one of the most ancient plants used and cultivated
by people. In China people started using hemp at around 6000 BC.
The fact that this plant is used in many different ways is one
of the reasons why it has been so successful for the last
millenniums. The fibres of this plant are particularly adapted
to the textile confection products. Incredible but true: the
first Levi's Jeans were made of hemp! It can also be found in
the paper and rope production Hence, hemp's heyday in Europe is
the 17th century, when it was used in the making process of
riggings on the shipyards. During the 20th century, Occidental
Europe mainly abandoned hemp growing. Currently, hemp is
immediately associated with the drug commonly called 'cannabis'.
As a result, hemp has become a sensitive and controversial topic.

The problematic of the use of hemp as a drug and its consequences on
health will be approached during this exhibition but it won't be the
main topic. Texts, pictures and displayed objects will focus on the
various uses of this age-old product. Other topics will be
approached such as the use of hemp in modern medicine or hemp's
botanical characteristics, especially its sexed nature.
Some punctual events will be organised during this temporary
exhibition. For example, a conference about the use of hemp in
medicine will be held as well as workshops to learn how to prepare
hemp fibres. These events are not only aimed at teachers but also at
every interested person.
This exhibition has been realised by Dr Gregor Kozlowski, scientific
collaborator of the museum.

On the occasion of its 40th anniversary,
the ornithological group of Fribourg has designed didactic boards
giving the public the chance to discover how rich birdlife is in
the region of Fribourg. This exhibition aims at improving
knowledge of nature and helping people to understand the necessity
of protecting our environment. A set of boards has been financed
by the " Société des Amis" and will be displayed at the museum.

Owls
From October 8, 2005 to April 23, 2006

A. Aebischer, MHNF |
Owls have always fascinated mankind because of
their discrete nightlife. During this exhibition, myths and
legends about these fabulous prey birds will be presented as well
as their way of life and their anatomic particularities. What are
the differences between mankind and owls regarding the sense of
hearing and eyesight? Why and how do the owls sing? How can one
distinguish the different species and where can they be found? The
presentation of species living in the region of Fribourg will be
emphasised.
The species will be presented through stuffed
animals, pictures and sounds. Visitors will have the chance to
compare their hearing and visual capabilities with the ones of the
owls. The trips of some owls tracked by satellite will be
displayed on screens.
